An improvement to Ethereum is expected with upgrade to version 2.0, but when is the full release date?
With Ethereum 2.0, which is also referred to as Serenity, ETH will presently move away from Proof-of-Work (PoW) algorithms, which are also used in cryptocurrency mining. ETH will, instead, opt for Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and Ethereum staking. The enhancement will bring about changes that will, according to ETH, make the cryptocurrency:
- More scalable
- More secure
- More sustainable.
So, the question is how long will the public have to wait before Eth2 is a reality?
Ethereum 2.0 Issue Date
A complete release of Eth2 is not projected to occur until into 2023, after the phase one launch in 2020.
Ethereum has experienced several length delays during its development.
The next stage in the upgrade is the scheduled Ethereum merge date of September 19, 2022. This is a minor delay on a previously projected August merge date.
This will allow the mainnet to merge with Ethereum 2.0’s Beacon Chain, making full staking possible. After this occurs, Ethereum shard chain launch will take place in 2023, increasing the blockchain capacity.
This all came after the Ethereum Difficulty Bomb went off at the end of June 2022.
Preceding this, the Ropsten testnet merged with the Beacon Chain in early June 2022.
The complete release of Eth2 is always subject to change, especially after experiencing earlier delays.
Obviously, even after the merge, Ethereum 2.0 will still be incomplete.
